Behind The Spoiler

Hello there, fellow PAX Community Discordian. It’s gfx here to bring you a pretty important and lengthy post regarding some design aspects of the PCD’s future. Most people aren’t fans of reading a huge wall of text, so I will also include a TL;DR at the bottom, but it would be great if you could stick with me for a few minutes of your time!

There’s a spoiler in #announcements that, if you want the intended reveal experience, you shouldn’t click until you finish this post (or the TL;DR).

I’m going to walk you through a bit of history before getting into the announcement itself. It’ll be a fun build-up, especially for those who have been with the server for a while as you’ll be able to see some interesting progression. As you read more and more, you may guess where things are heading, but regardless, I still hope it’s a fun little trip. Once again, if you don’t care about any of that, feel free to go straight to the TL;DR. I do warn, this post is a bit lengthy.

June 2017. The early beginnings of the PCD. The server began, as stated, in June that year. I believe I came along and joined very early July (as far as memory can serve), about 1 to 2 weeks into the server’s life. Why does that matter? Well, only soon after, this little fella was created:

PaxterIf you’ve only seen this as the icon of the server but don’t know much else, this is Paxter. He has essentially become our logo, mascot, lord and savior. He was designed with one main thing in mind: represent each PAX event in a fun and playful way. I feel that what we created as a community (since there was plenty of input at the time) was something fun and iconic for the server. As mentioned, though, there was lots of input. This was not the first design of what came to be ‘Paxter’. Time to share a little more history.

I don’t believe I’ve publically shared this, but I could be wrong. Keep in mind, not every step of this chart was shown to the community. A good half of these were simply back-end iterations of trial and error, seeing what would and wouldn’t work. Fun fact: the only reason Paxter has a mouth is due to received feedback that stated the hands mixed with the controller (pre-Switch) looked like some misshaped ball-gag. Ain’t that nice? Anyways, eventually the community, Andeh, and myself were satisfied with how Paxter had turned out, and the rest was history…

Until recently, of course.

August 2019. After contemplating with myself for a bit, I decided that Paxter’s design could definitely be better. There were a few key things I initially wanted to simply tighten up, so that’s what I began to work on. The main thing that stuck out to me for a while had been the headphones. Even from the beginning, they felt a little ‘wonky’. Originally I had thought this was fine, as it was (arguably) working with the rest of the design; however, when our other designer, CMYKMatter, stated some of the issues with them, it became more apparent how odd they really were.

Later in the month, I decided to take a stab at fixing the headphones alone. During this process I faced two challenges: (1) trying to change a design in a vector-based environment that wasn’t originally designed in one, and (2) trying to make the headphones look more like normal headphones, but not clash with the overall “cartoony” feel of the logo. And I am proud to say that after a few hours of hard work… none of it paid off! Let me show you one of the iterations:
On the left, you’ll see the headphones in a static position, and on the right is the headphones “formed” to Paxter. During this design process, it occurred to me that making normal headphones look normal on Paxter was going to be much more difficult due to how he is designed. At that point, the next thought was basically: “do we throw out Paxter and start from scratch?”

And the answer to that was no. But also yes? But definitely no as well. But… maybe? It was an interesting thing to figure out, but in the end, there was a new goal in mind. That goal was not to ditch Paxter and design a new logo. He has become a staple of this community we’ve all come together to form. Instead, I felt the goal was to ditch Paxter and design a better Paxter. One that held on to the same interesting and more iconic characteristics of the current logo, while ditching its underlying (and more obvious) issues.

Side note: just to list a few issues off to you from a design perspective so you don’t think it was all because the headphones were “a little too wonky”, there are also issues with:

  • Uniqueness; still using Discord’s Clyde as a rough (but still noticeable) base
  • Design modularity (i.e. not very versatile to be wearing/holding/doing many other things)
  • Visual clarity, primarily at small sizes

And a more personal opinionated critique: it didn’t have a very “modern” feel to me. Needless to say, between all of this, I felt I could do better now. And with that, I worked towards building a new, but hopefully familiar Paxter. One that I hoped the community would like, or at least come to like, a lot more. So come early September, over the course of several days, with a good amount of hours put into refining lines, adding several initial design options, and of course getting some helpful opinions and critiques from our other designer, Paxter “2.0” was born.

At this point, you can reveal the spoiler image in the Discord server.

So, all I will say about the new design at this point is as followed: I am very proud of how it came out, and I believe it to be a huge improvement over current Paxter. I know many of you may be unhappy or unsure about it at first because it is a change, but things can’t and shouldn’t always stay the same. I believe most of you will come to like the new design as I feel it has much more character to it, as well as many more possibilities.

While this guy won’t be debuting on the server till after PAX Aus and on merch or things of the sort until the end of 2019/early 2020, we’ve decided to give you this preview of him to hopefully get you acclimated with what is to come. We will be showing off what is coming and what is possible with new and improved Paxter in the weeks to come. But for now, thank you very much for reading this if you stuck around, and as always, thank you for your continued support of the PAX Community Discord.

TL;DR – Paxter, our Discord server’s logo/mascot, has had his share of design flaws. While he has been a great visual representation of the community, both with the colors of each PAX event to the fun and joyful nature of the character, his design has, as of late, brought me to try and fix some of his flaws. After realizing that fixes to the logo’s minor issues were hindered by greater underlying issues, a redesign was instead prepared. Paxter has been redesigned from the ground up to maintain the same spirit, but have fewer issues and become more iconic and versatile.

You should now reveal the spoiler image in the server.

The day after this post goes live, new Paxter will not be hidden behind spoiler warnings and a “reveal schedule” will be posted. We have a few things to show you and some finalizing before we’re ready to roll him out, so stay tuned for that and keep an eye out Tuesday afternoon for that, as it will likely be a silent announcement with no ping. Whether you read the entire post (which ended up being longer than expected) or just scrolled to the TL;DR, thank you for taking the time to stay updated with the server.

All the best,

Get Ready for PAX South!

Woo! It’s been a while, with the holidays and such, but we’re back at it, getting ready for PAX South 2019! Let’s go through all the updates we missed!

PAX South Badges and Pins

We announced our newest look for the PCD Community Badges. Did you miss it? Here’s an image to get you hyped up for it!

We’ve already closed our badge forms for South, but we’ll reopen them shortly so you can start getting hyped for East! For those who ordered your south badge, we can’t wait to show them off to you! South will also be getting our new, flashy, redesigned pins as well! These pins were first featured at West, and we’re excited to bring them to South and East! The form for the pins will stay open through to East, so make sure you get your orders in! Check out https://paxter.gg/merch to get you pin ordered!

Speaking of, you might be wondering how to get your fancy new PCD stuff! Fret not! A few days before PAX South officially starts, you’ll see a brand new channel where we’ll make regular announcements of where you can find us for your merch! Once you’ve picked them up, you can use a handy function to get your butt out of the channel and back to enjoying San Antonio! If you’d like to continually hunt us down for fun, though, feel free to not leave and just hang out for our messages! We’ll be all over the place.

Some Server Updates for You

Did you know? We hosted our first ever Overwatch Tourney, and had a lot of fun playing for the day! Our winner, BugCatcherMookie, snagged the title and some loot! But we weren’t done, yet. During the holidays, we were throwing out all kinds of goodies, like codes for games, Discord Nitro, and even a PCD Pin! Stick around, and we’ll keep throwing out more awesome stuff!

We’ll also be hosting a Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Tourney! Make sure you get signed up, even just for fun! The winner will be getting a $25 Amazon gift card, so get to signing up. Tourney will be on February 2nd.

Social Media

In prep for South, we did a PAX South Prep Stream with our pal Zerzhul! We got to chat about what you should bring, what to expect, and what to have fun at while in San Antonio! Did you miss the stream? No problem! You can check it out, uploaded on our YouTube channel!

Welp! That’s all we got time for in this update. See you in San Antonio, gang!

PAX Community Discord Tournaments

It’s finally here! We’ve begun preparations for the first ever PAX Community Discord Tournaments, and you’re invited! Here’s how they’ll go.

Myself and gfx will be hosting tournaments for Overwatch and League of Legends, respectively. We’ve included separate sign ups for each tournament. These forms are used to build interest and get a rough set of numbers for people interested in participating. This will make things easier for our step two: creating teams and organizing matches.

Each tournament will be run bracket style, where teams will face off each other to move on to the next round. The winners of each tournament will win a prize! Overwatch will get 11 lootboxes ($10) and League of Legends will get $10 each towards skins (1350 in-game currency).

Let us know if your interested by going to these forms to sign up, and good luck out there!

Overwatch sign-ups can be found here!

League of Legends sign-ups can be found here!

PAX Community Discord Server Change Log – Post-PAX West

PAX West has passed, so here are some server changes being made going forward. We hope you like them. <3

Roles

    • More roles can now be requested! As far as games go, you can now add Rocket League, PCVR, or PSVR. But wait, there’s more…
    • We’ve added Pronoun roles! You can now add He/Him, She/Her, They/Them, or Other roles, inspired by the Pinny Arcade set and overall PAX diversity ideology!
    • Staff roles have been reworked a bit, so if you notice some changes there, just know we’re constantly tweaking things behind the scenes for OPTIMAL MODERATION.

Channels

      • #west-meetup has retired until next year.
      • #aus-meetup and #unplugged-meetup have been added for verified users.

Òt͡her̢

    • Th҉e D͉̰̣͑́ǒ͉̱͉̺͌̏͞ċͭ̌͑̓͐͡t̨̩̱̳͍ͬ͑̾o͙̫̪͔̲̟͆ř̬̬͎ͥ̀͋͢ ̷h̶a͜s̴ ̴arri̴vęd̨.

We’ve noticed a lot of members of the server have been asking how they can support the server in more ways. We love the idea of this and wanted to see how everyone was interested in supporting the server, so we created a survey form for people to fill out! Let us know what you think by going here.

That’s all for now!

How Do I Get My PCD Merch?!

Don’t worry! We got you! We know you’re excited to get your hands on your merch items! Now that we’re less then a week away and all of our orders are confirmed, we’re ready to reveal our master plan! Bwuahahahahaha … cough cough. Sorry about that. Anyways:

If you’re reading this post, quick! Check Discord! You should see yourself in a few new channels! The category is… PCD Event Pickup! Congrats! Now that you’re a member of this exclusive, elite channel, you’ll receive updates on where myself and gfx are located at nearly all times during PAX West! Even in the bathroom! Ok, wait, not there. But you’ll get regular updates, so you don’t have to worry about making the trek to Game Night (even though it’ll be reeeeeal fun!) or during any of the official meetups planned. If we’re in a line, or waiting for a panel, you’ll most definitely see an update from us!

Right now you’re probably asking: “That’s cool and all, but what if I get the stuff? I don’t need to keep getting pings about where you are!” And you’d be right to ask that, because we have an easy way to get out! We’ve included a neat channel named #i-have-my-stuff. And guess what? It gives you the ability to leave! There’s a message posted there, with a fancy reaction. Hit that reaction twice, and you’ll vanish from our super secret channels! Just like that! Simple, huh?

And that’s it! Pretty easy, right? Make sure once you’re in the channel, to keep a look out for the ping in that channel so you can make haste to the location listed and grab your merch! We’re pretty lenient on this stuff, but we don’t like shipping something if we don’t have to!

Not sure if you’re ready to attend PAX West? We’ve made an awesome video to answer some common questions and listen to what to expect when you get to Seattle! Check it out here, and use the description to get to the questions you need answering the most!

We’ll see you guys in Seattle!

PAX West In Sight

With only a little over a month left before PAX West 2018 kicks off, we have a few more announcements/reminders to send your way regarding various things about the server and events going on within it. Shall we begin?

First things first: PCD Merch! That includes shirts, pins, and badges. This isn’t just a reminder, but now deadlines are coming up. Let’s go one by one.
Shirts: The PCD West 2018 Shirt will be available until Friday, August 17th. After that, the design will be retired. Get one while you can!
Pins: Pin orders will be closing temporarily on Thursday, July 19th. If you definitely want to get your hands on one, order soon. We can not guarantee how many will be available after initial orders close. Orders will then open up several weeks later once more to those who would like to order from the remaining pool. This is for both West and Unplugged.
Badges: Looking to get your hands on a PCD Badge to rep at either PAX West or PAX Unplugged? Reserve one soon, as reservations will close Friday, July 27th to give sufficient time for the creation and ordering process.

NOTE: For those of you attending Unplugged, a part of the badges are slightly different since the event is focused around tabletop. Below you can see the small change. If you have a badge from a previous event, are attending Unplugged, and want the tabletop variant, feel free to reserve a new one for the event. If you don’t feel like donating to get a custom badge, no worries! Just reserve a free one.

TOURNAMENTS
We got lots of responses to our tournament survey (which you can still vote/add options to) and we’re happy to say that yes, tournaments will be happening in the near future! We’re still working out some of the details since these things take time, but right now it’s looking like the first tournament will be either Overwatch or Rocket League. While we work out the logistics (and prizes), you sit tight. We’ll have more info on that soon. Our goal is to have our first tournament before PAX West rolls in. We’ll see if we can make that happen. This first tournament will be sign-up based with a first-come first-serve policy. Future tournaments may have different ways of entering, but that’s still further down the road.

A New Challenger Approaches
Alright, not so much a challenger, but a new stream!  Starting in just a few weeks, we’ll be hosting a new live stream we’re calling “PAX Prep”. *cue splash art*
To give you the gist, the idea behind the stream is to discuss the upcoming PAX event. We’ll be talking about some tips we’ve learned along the way to make the most of your trip and event, discussing what we’re excited for, interacting with community members in the chat, and plenty more. We want this stream to be something a lot of people can enjoy, interact with, and hopefully even benefit from, so we hope you decide to join us! It should be a ton of fun. We’ll be announcing the date and time soon enough, but if you’re interested in the premise and want to suggest a day of the week or time of day to better your chances of being able to stop by, feel free to do so in the #suggestions channel within the server.

Thanks for reading this big wall of text. Tried to add some fancy images to hold your interest… did it work? No? Well it was a valiant attempt. We look forward to seeing you at PAX West 2018 in less than 50 days!

How About a Tournament?

There are many types of gamers out there; ranging from those who primarily play just for fun to those who play to win each and every time. Wherever you may fall on that spectrum, it’s fair to say that most people, even the most casual of players, enjoy a challenge every once and awhile, especially when it’s for prizes. So how does a little tournament sound? Or tournaments, with an ‘s’ at the end? As in like… multiple tourna-… yeah you get it.

We’re thinking that tournaments would be another great way to bring the community together outside of simply when PAX events are happening, and we want to hear your opinion too! If you’re interested, please take a moment to let us know what sort of games you’d like to see a tournament for!

Here you can access the form where you can find some game ideas already suggested, as well as add your own.  Thanks for participating, and we hope to host the first of several soon! We’ll be sure to think of some nice prizes that’ll be worth competing for.

Server Change Log – 5/17/18

To reduce clutter in the #announcements channel, we’ll be starting to move server changes over here so they’re easier to read and keep track of. We’ve got a decent amount of things to go over today, so keep on reading to get all the goods.

Roles and Pings

  • ROLE REQUEST OVERHAUL! You can now request new roles (and remove them too) just by reacting/un-reacting in the #roles channel! THE FUTURE IS NOW!
  • After observing usefulness (or lack there of), we have removed the Omeganaut, Content Creator, and Media roles.
  • Pings. Some are okay, but too much are annoying. We’ll be making the efforts to further stop unwanted @’s by withholding event role pings (i.e. @West) when not completely necessary. You should only expect a few pings here and there for your event role; most being when that particular event is approaching.

Channels and Channel Categories

  • #location-requesting has been replaced with #roles.
  • #lobby has been renamed to #lounge for consistency.
  • Off topic conversations can now be spread out into other channels in the new ‘Off Topic’ category that may better suit the (off) topic at hand. In addition to #off-topic, there’s now #creative-art, #music, #movies-and-tv#pets-and-animals, #food, and #memes-and-gifs.
  • Reorganized the ‘General’ category, with the addition of the ‘PAX Lounges’ category channels.
  • ‘PAX Lounges’ category has been removed.
  • Cleaned up some unnecessary news feed channels. You’ll find the remaining few under the ‘Events Info’ category.

Reminder!
PAX Unplugged goes on sale today. Make sure to get your badges/hotels if you plan on attending! This year’s event is already looking like it’ll be a good one. We’ll have more news regarding the PCD and Unplugged after West badges go on sale. Stay tuned!
